The Only Thing Worse Than No Security Is False Security!

Hi Gang:

Today’s commentary is based upon an article I recently wrote for the CAPS (Californians for Population Stabilization) website.  My focus for that article was the arrest of an illegal alien, and citizen of Nigeria, who managed to conceal his true identity and illegal immigration status for approximately 20 years and along the way he became a supervisor at a private security at Liberty International Airport in Newark, New Jersey!
Here is an excerpt from a news report that was published recently in Bloomberg’s Business Week taht reported on the arrest of that illegal alien whose true name is now believed to be Bimbo Olumuyiwa Oyewole:

Authorities were alerted to Oyewole’s alleged double life when the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s inspector general’s office in Hoboken received an anonymous letter, the officials said. The letter described Oyewole’s using additional names, though those weren’t divulged Tuesday.

The Port Authority, which operates the area’s main airports and other transit hubs, said Oyewole entered the United States illegally in 1989 and had worked under several contractors at the airport, most recently FJC Security Services, and supervised about 30 guards. The agency said its investigation found no indication that he used the fake identity for any reason other than to live in the United States.

An FJC spokesman said Monday that Oyewole didn’t have access to employees’ personal information in his position as tour supervisor.

Potentially more problematic from a security standpoint, Oyewole had access to sensitive areas of the airport, including the tarmac and the planes themselves. The employees he supervised also inspected cargo vehicles for possible unauthorized cargo, an airport employee familiar with Oyewole told The Associated Press on Monday.

In reviewing that excerpt you will notice that Oyewole worked for numerous private security companies and that his jobs provided him with access to highly sensitive areas at airports.

Stop and let this sink in!  In the name of national security, anyone seeking to board an airliner is prodded, poked, x-rayed and groped yet for years, an illegal alien who was using a stolen identity was presumably able to gain access to airliners and sensitive areas around the airport.  Furthermore, his most recent job required that he supervise 30 other such private security guards!  How difficult would it have been for him or one of his subordinate security officers to place weapons on an airplane or in a supposedly “secure area” in an airport where a terrorist could have picked up that weapon and then brought it onboard an airliner?

This revives the age old question of “Who watches the watchers?”

Additionally, it is important to note that the only way that Oyewole’s crimes were discovered was when an anonymous letter was sent to law enforcement authorities detailing his deceptions.  If ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) had been seeking to identify, apprehend and seek the deportation of illegal aliens from the United States, it is entirely possible that his situation might well have been discovered long ago.  In law enforcement, the concept of “randomness” is considered an important tool.  In fact, Mike Chertoff himself, the former Secretary of Homeland Security, noted the significance of randomness when he addressed the ways in which the TSA purportedly protects our nation and our citizens.  Here is the paragraph in which he makes note of this concept:

We not only have watch lists, we not only have the TSA screening function, but we are now deploying behavioral screening officers to more than 40 of our nation’s airports in order to identify potentially threatening passengers based on their behavior. We’ve learned lessons, for example, from the Israelis and the Europeans in how to train our screeners to look for certain kinds of behavior that denotes a possible threat or an uneasiness that warrants a closer inspection. This is a proven tool. It enhances yet another layer of security, and it helps us build an element of randomness in the process, which is very important in terms of deterring terrorists.

Here is the link to Mr. Chertoff’s remarks in their entirety:
Speaking from my personal experience as a former INS Special Agent, I can tell you that on numerous occasions, the simple arrest of an illegal alien for violations of our immigration laws resulted in the discovery of all sorts of fugitives and evidence of a wide variety of serious crimes.  As the slogan for the Lottery states, “You’ve got to be in it, to win it!”  This is not limited to immigration law enforcement.  It is an established fact that many of the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted” are ultimately arrested by local police and other law enforcement agencies going about their routine duties such as stopping drivers who are speeding.  The current policies of the administration to not seek to locate, apprehend or deport illegal aliens unless they have not only been accused of committing felonies but have been convicted of committing felonies provides a sort of “playbook” for terrorists.  All that a terrorist now has to do is run our nation’s borders and not commit additional crimes other than identity theft.  For many years many of our political leaders have asserted that illegal aliens do the work Americans won’t do and thus justify their refusals to have our immigration laws effectively enforced.  What they are quick to forget is that the easiest way for a terrorist to hide in plain sight is to take a nondescript job that provides that provides them with camouflage and the ability to move easily among us as they go about their preparations to participate in a terrorist attack.  In fact, the day before a terrorist engages in such an attack he (she) is likely to hide in plain sight by going to his job!

In the case of Bimbo Olumuyiwa Oyewole, his job not only provided him with camouflage but extraordinary access to a potential terrorist target!  We need to be clear, of course, that there has been no allegations made that Oyewole has any involvement, whatsoever, with any terrorist group or terrorist activities- the point remains, however, that no one really knows why he would have sought out numerous private security guard jobs that did provide him with such access.  Additionally, it is also important to contemplate that there are undoubtedly other illegal aliens whose true identities, backgrounds and intentions are unknown and unknowable who are, at this very moment working at sensitive jobs.

As I have noted on many occasions, the use of “Background Checks” to screen individuals including where immigration benefits is concerned does not provide an effective means to adequately vet those whose who seek such benefits.  Any alien whose fingerprints are not on file and who uses a false name could easily game such a process.  The most effective methods of screening such applicants requires a “Background Investigation” whereby investigators actually knock on doors and interview neighbors, co-workers, friends and family members.  While not foolproof, such investigations are far more effective, but they are costly and time-consuming.

Currently the entire immigration system lacks integrity and the many failures of the federal government to instill meaningful integrity into the enforcement an administration of our immigration laws creates a serious threat to national security.

If our government’s failures to secure our nation’s borders and effectively enforce our immigration laws concerns you or especially if it angers you, I ask you to call your Senators and Congressional “Representative. This is not only your right- it is your obligation!

All I ask is that you make it clear to our politicians that we are not as dumb as they hope we are!

We live in a perilous world and in a perilous era. The survival of our nation and the lives of our citizens hang in the balance.

This is neither a Conservative issue, nor is it a Liberal issue- simply stated, this is most certainly an AMERICAN issue!

You are either part of the solution or you are a part of the problem!

Democracy is not a spectator sport!

Lead, follow or get out of the way!

The Only Thing Worse Than No Security Is False Security!

The use of camouflage is commonplace throughout nature.  All sorts of creatures use the ability to alter their appearances in order to hide in plain sight.  Chameleons are lizards that can change their colors but are not alone in this ability.  A wide variety of creatures are able to effectively blend into their surroundings to make it difficult for their enemies to spot them and turn them into a meal.  Some creatures need to blend into their environment in order to be able to attack creatures that they eat.  For creatures throughout the animal kingdom, the use of camouflage is nothing less than a matter of life and death!

Camouflage can also be of equal seriousness for members of the human species.  Soldiers wear camouflage fatigues that are of varying colors depending on the colors that they will likely find on the battlefield and all sorts of vehicles are festooned with paint schemes that act as camouflage.  Everything from tanks to trucks and aircraft are painted to best conceal them from their enemies.  The use of stealth technology has kicked camouflage up a notch!

There are other ways that those who seek to cover their tracks or hide in plain sight may accomplish their goals.  For criminals and terrorists, the use of false identities and false identity documents may also provide effective camouflage.  The use of aliases is an age-old tactic and provided the incentives for law enforcement to use fingerprinting and more sophisticated biometrics to combat the use of false names.  However, there are limitations where these countermeasures are concerned.  An illegal alien who has never been fingerprinted and uses a false name may well get away with his subterfuge.  This is why background checks are often easily defeated by malevolent aliens whose fingerprints are not on file and who use fictitious identities.  In fact, the 19 terrorists who so savagely attacked our nation on September 11, 2001, in the aggregate, used more than 300 false identities or variations of false identities.

This past week an illegal alien whose true name is believed to be Bimbo Olumuyiwa Oyewole, a 54 year old citizen of Nigeria was arrested by police as a result of a cold case investigation into the murder of an American citizen by the name of Jerry Thomas who was murdered in 1992.  During the course of the investigation it was determined that Oyewole had managed to obtain a number of identity documents relating to Mr. Thomas.  At the minimum Oyewole is presumably guilty of identity theft and possibly other violations of law relating to his use of the false name and his violation of immigration laws.  The more sinister possibility that needs to be addressed is the possibility that he had an involvement in the murder of Mr. Thomas.

This story by itself is certainly disturbing- but there is another dimension to this story that raises even more disturbing issues.  Up until his arrest in Elizabeth, New Jersey Mr. Oyewole has been working as a supervisor for a security firm that has been hired by the Port of New York and New Jersey to   provide security at Newark’s Liberty International Airport, the same airport from which United Airlines Flight 93 departed on September 11, 2001.  Yes, that Flight 93!

More details about this case were noted in a Bloomberg BusinessWeek article that was published on May 16, 2012 and was entitled, ”Airport worker allegedly had man’s ID before death.”

One of the interesting bits of information that was reported in that news article is the fact that Oyewole’s was increased from $75,000 to $250,000 when it was disclosed that he may have used additional false identities over the years.

As a supervisory security guard Mr. Oyewole would have been subjected to at least a fundamental background check- a check he easily passed.  If the administration was to attempt to provide unknown millions, perhaps tens of millions of illegal aliens with pathways to citizenship when these aliens are undocumented- meaning that they do not have reliable documentation to attest to their true identities, the likelihood is great that the criminals and terrorists among them would easily pass the background checks just as easily as Bimbo Olumuyiwa Oyewole did!

Incidentally, prosecutors are now stating that they are not even certain that this name is really his either- but the security tag that provided him with access to highly sensitive areas of the airport including the airplanes themselves bore the name Jerry Thomas.  This raises the question often repeated in “Marathon Man,” a movie thriller released in 1976, “Is it safe?”

By now, we all know the answer to that question!
