Although I usually write about immigration-related issues, this news report
in the Huffington Post caught my eye this evening and I had to pass it along.
We are currently being bombarded by all sorts of horror stories involving the misuse of firearms by criminals and sociopaths that would appear to be aimed at the Second Amendment. (Pardon the pun!)
The news report for which I have provided the link and the headline below provides an excellent example of how a gun in the hands of a trained and rational person can save a life! (There is more than one side to a political position!)
Charlie Blackmore, Wisconsin Marine Corps Veteran, Draws Gun On Suspect In Beating (VIDEO)
Please take the time to read the news report, watch the video and, if
you deem it worthy, forward this e-mail to as many of your friends as possible.
The First Amendment reads as follows:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
The Founding Fathers understood the importance of debate to the democratic process. That is why they included the “…right of the people peaceably to assemble.” At the time of the founding of this great nation, the only way to have a debate or discourse was meet in person with those with whom you wished to conduct that discussion or debate. They just wanted the participants to do so Peaceably!
We have become so polarized, perhaps, in part, egged on by various television programs that seek a “food fight” on the air to garner higher ratings!
All Americans are entitled to their beliefs as long as their beliefs don’t cause harm to others. When folks disagree with us, they are not our enemies, only our fellow Americans who are exercising their First Amendment rights! With effective persuasion, we may be ultimately turn them into our allies- that is the principle behind debate! Debate and discourse are “as American as apple pie!”
Please arm yourselves with the facts and then seek to engage in honest discussions with your neighbors. Wouldn’t it be amazing if the confrontational nature of discourse in our society was elevated to the sort of exercise the Founding Fathers conceived of in writing the First Amendment?
We must end the madness that is wrecking havoc on the United States. We must not allow the current “divide and conquer” strategy to succeed in tearing this nation apart!
All I ask is that you make it clear to our politicians that we are not as dumb as they hope we are!
We live in a perilous world and in a perilous era. The survival of our nation and the lives of our citizens hang in the balance.
This is neither a Conservative issue, nor is it a Liberal issue- simply stated, this is most certainly an AMERICAN issue!
You are either part of the solution or you are a part of the problem!
Democracy is not a spectator sport!
Lead, follow or get out of the way!
