Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on 3/20/13

Hi Gang:

On March 20th, I joined four other witnesses at a hearing conducted by the Senate Committee on the Judiciary on the topic:
“Building an Immigration System Worthy of American Values.”
As is often the case, members of Congressional committees and subcommittees often send questions to the witnesses of a hearing after the hearing is concluded.  Although only a few members of the Senate Judiciary committee attended the hearing, only Senator Grassley sent me questions.
I have decided to provide you with my responses to Senator Grassley’s questions.  The document is a long one- it runs about 26 pages.  In an age where we have reduced communication to tweets and other electronic barks and soundbites, it is impossible to have a meaningful discussion these days.
I can assure you that it took me far longer to write my responses than it took me to write them!
Please read my responses so that you will understand my perspectives on this critically important issue and then, if you see fit, please forward this to everyone you know and ask them to do the same thing- I am attempting to create a “Bucket Brigade of Truth!”
Here are my responses:

I welcome your feedback!
In his novel, “1984,” George Orwell devised Newspeak as a form of mental censorship.  You cannot have thoughts if the words don’t exist.  Today there are politicians who have come to seek to create Orwellian Newspeak in a number of issues but no more so than where immigration is concerned.  The elimination of the term “Alien” from the vernacular is clearly such an effort.  In point of fact, the term alien appears in numerous instances in literature, including the Bible and in America’s immigration laws and in the immigration laws of virtually every other country.
Under the Immigration and Nationality Act, the all-inclusive body of law that deals with the immigration issue, the term alien is simply defined as being “Any person, not a citizen or national of the United States.”
I defy anyone to tell me wherein lies the insult in that definition.  The biggest problem with the term alien is that it provides clarity and clarity is the last thing that the immigration anarchists who are opposed to securing America’s borders and enforcing America’s immigration laws want!
I am profoundly concerned that the democratic process that is at the foundation of this democratic republic are being railroaded by the “Gang of Eight” being sequestered behind closed doors to hammer out the basis for sweeping revisions to America’s immigration laws and the only pre-requisite according to some members of the Gang of Eight and members of Congress is that the US / Mexican border be made secure.
This is the equivalent of an airline captain checking the inflation of the nose gear on his jumbo jet and declaring his airliner with hundreds of passengers on board to be airworthy for a long flight over a stormy sea!  I would not want to be a passenger on that airliner and I suspect you wouldn’t want to be, either.
As I have noted on ever so many occasions, the Immigration laws of the United States were enacted to protect innocent lives and the jobs of American workers.  If our government ultimately enacts Comprehensive Immigration Reform I am concerned that it may well involve not the 12 million illegal aliens we are told are present in the United States but 30 or 40 million illegal aliens- many of whom have not even, as of now, entered the United States.  To put it bluntly, the United States lacks both the capacity and the will to even conduct face to face, in person interviews with these millions of aliens.  There will be no background investigations- only background checks which means that an alien who uses a false name and has never been fingerprinted in the United States will be able to game the system by lying on his application.
This would create a catastrophe for national security, criminal justice, public safety, the economy, unemployment, healthcare, public health, education, the environment, infrastructure and many other issues and would be as irrevocable as driving your car off a cliff!
Again,  urge you to read my responses to Senator Grassley’s thoughtful and insightful questions!
Also- to refresh your recollection- I sent these links out previously but I thought it would be helpful to include them here (again):
Here is the link that provides a video of the hearing as well as the prepared testimony of the witnesses:

Here is my closing statement in two formats to hopefully enable you to open them:

Immigration is not a single issue but a singular issue that impacts nearly every challenge and threat confronting the United States today!

Our armed forces are charged with securing America’s borders externally while the DHS is supposed to secure those same borders from within.  The failures of the DHS to live up to its half of the equation are undermining the efforts, valor and incredible sacrifices of Americas men and women who serve in our military! The immigration laws are supposed to achieve two primary goals- to protect American lives and protect Americans’ jobs.

Our nation is greatly benefited by the rich diversity of our people which is why I could never imagine living anywhere except New York City, arguably the most diverse city in our nation if not, in fact, the world.  However, my idea of diversity most certainly does not include members of MS-13, the Mexican drug cartels or members of other transnational gangs or members of al-Qaeda or other terrorist organizations!

It is also vital that American workers never be made to compete with foreign workers for their jobs!  (This requirement is a component of the Immigration Laws that are not being enforced today!)

If our government’s failures to secure our nation’s borders and effectively enforce our immigration laws that are intended to protect our nation and our citizens concerns you or especially if it angers you, I ask you to call your Senators and Congressional “Representative. This is not only your right- it is your obligation!

I also ask that you pass this e-mail along to your friends and neighbors- I am attempting to create a “Bucket Brigade of Truth!”

We the People must make it clear to our politicians that we are not as dumb as they hope we are!

We live in a perilous world and in a perilous era. The survival of our nation and the lives of our citizens hang in the balance.

This is neither a Conservative issue, nor is it a Liberal issue- simply stated, this is most certainly an AMERICAN issue!

You are either part of the solution or you are a part of the problem!

Democracy is not a spectator sport!

Lead, follow or get out of the way!
