"Enforcing Immigration Laws To Get Americans Back To Work"

Hi Gang:

My commentary today is based on an article I recently wrote for the CAPS (Californians for Population Stabilization) website in which I explained why it is absolutely critical that our government enforce our nation’s immigration laws.

The immigration issue, as I have often pointed out, is not a single issue but a singular issue because it impacts just about every challenge and threat our nation now confronts.  Failures to secure our borders and enforce our immigration laws impact everything from national security, criminal justice and community safety, the economy, unemployment, healthcare and public health, education and the environment.

It is absolutely preposterous for the administration to claim to be waging a “War on Drugs” and a “War on Terrorism” and not secure our borders and not enforce our immigration laws!  While Janet Napolitano, the Secretary of Homeland Security stands before the microphones and cameras at news conferences and declares that there is no “Spillover violence” from Mexico in the United States and that our borders are secure on one day, she is likely to stand before the same microphones and cameras the next day and admit that hundreds of American cities from coast to coast and border to border, are now infested by members of the highly violent Mexican drug cartels!  Additionally, there are many other transnational gangs from countries around the world that have set up shop in additional cities across our vast nation.

It is equally preposterous that politicians and members of the news media hang on every statistic concerning unemployment rates and the numbers of jobs that are lost or created but that just about no one is able or willing to connect the dots and acknowledge that the quickest way of the getting the greatest number of out of work American workers back to work is to have the government enforce the immigration laws that at their foundation were enacted to protect American lives and protect American jobs!

The leadership of the Republican Party was quick to refer to the increase in the unemployment rate as being disastrous yet not one of those leaders of the Republican Party was willing to step up to the forest of microphones and talk about the need to enforce immigration laws to free up jobs now being held by foreign workers.

Unemployment statistics are also not truly revealing.  The unemployment rate as noted in the media ignores American workers who have stopped looking for work and have exhausted their unemployment benefits.  The unemployment rate does not take into account those who are employed but earning paychecks that are significant lower than the paychecks that they earned just a few years ago.  These underemployed Americans are not reflected in those unemployment statistics.

What must be remembered is that for decades leaders of both the Democratic and Republican political parties have worked to enable millions of illegal aliens to enter the United States to further their own agendas.  While they may have different goals, both parties have found that opening the flood gates to millions of foreign workers ultimately serves their supposedly divergent purposes.  Meanwhile American workers have suffered grievously through a loss of jobs, a significant reduction in wages and a loss of benefits.

Simply stated, leaders of both parties have taken to using Mexico as their role model.  These practices are destroying America’s MIddle Class.  It was the ability for Americans who were able to acquire higher education or acquire skills or trades to earn more money and join the ranks of the Middle Class.  This is what the “American Dream” was all about!

The advocates for open borders and massive amnesty programs for unknown millions of illegal aliens whose true identities, backgrounds, affiliations and intentions are unknown and unknowable with “pathways to citizenship” took H. L. Mencken’s quote to heart- “Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public!”

(Mencken had in incredible way of articulating the failings of the human species in a series of brilliant and insightful quotes well worth considering.)

The advocates for open borders knew that they could not win the debate about immigration by relying on the laws, the facts, commonsense or morality- all of these opposed the agenda of the open borders advocates whom I have come to refer to as the “Immigration Anarchists.”  So they took to the tactic of claiming that those who insist that our nation’s borders need to be secured were racists and, incredibly, many people bought this bizarre argument!

Recently New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg claimed that the solution to our high unemployment rate is to open our nation to more foreign workers!  I have compared the issue of admitting more foreign workers at a time of high unemployment to playing the game of musical chairs and having more kids suddenly admitted into the room where the game was being played.  However, these new players did not bring more chairs with them- so the odds of a child not being seated when the music stopped would increase dramatically!

In thinking about Mayor Bloomberg’s nonsensical call for admitting more foreign workers to help get unemployed Americans back to work, I came to the conclusion that based on his wacky proposal, if he was sitting in a rowboat that had a hole in the bottom through which water was gushing, instead of plugging the hole and bailing the water out of the boat, he would probably claim he could keep the boat from winding up at the bottom of the lake by drilling a second hole in the bottom of the boat!  He would then predict that miraculously the water that was gushing into the boat from the first hole would simply exit through the second hole he would drill!

The time has long since come for a true reality check!

If our government’s failures to secure our nation’s borders and effectively enforce our immigration laws concerns you or especially if it angers you, I ask you to call your Senators and Congressional “Representative. This is not only your right- it is your obligation!

All I ask is that you make it clear to our politicians that we are not as dumb as they hope we are!

We live in a perilous world and in a perilous era. The survival of our nation and the lives of our citizens hang in the balance.

This is neither a Conservative issue, nor is it a Liberal issue- simply stated, this is most certainly an AMERICAN issue!

You are either part of the solution or you are a part of the problem!

Democracy is not a spectator sport!

Lead, follow or get out of the way!

Enforcing Immigration Laws To Get Americans Back To Work

Virtually every candidate for elected office knows that he (she) must proclaim his goal of “creating jobs.”

This is the case for those who seek office at the local level and is certainly true for those who aspire to win elections for seats in both houses of the United States Congress and for the Presidency.  Shortly after winning enough delegates to the Republican convention to lock up the Republican nomination Mitt Romney talked about his abilities and experiences as a businessman to know how to create jobs for Americans.

Yet think about how many candidates for elected office have taken to the bizarre position that they oppose the enforcement of our immigration laws.  There are mayors of cities that are scattered around the United States who have managed to win their campaigns for their elected positions by declaring their cities to be “Sanctuary Cities!”  There are governors of states such as New York’s Governor Cuomo who has withdrawn the State of New York from the Secure Communities program complaining that not all of the deportable aliens who were being identified in the prison system should be removed from the United States.

What many people may not know is that prior to the Second World War, the enforcement and administration of the immigration laws was the responsibility of the United States Department of Labor.  It was understood that labor is a commodity and that by flooding the labor pool with a huge and easily exploitable workforce of foreign workers that American workers would likely lose their jobs to foreign competitors and that even if Americans were not displaced, they would be forced to accept lower wages because of the fundamental economic principle known as “Supply and Demand.”  If you increase the supply of a commodity but do nothing to increase the demand, the value of that commodity decreases- often precipitously.

We are constantly reminded that the United States was built by immigrants.  Indeed, our nation has what is arguably the most diverse population of any country on the planet.  However, what came to be known as the “American Dream” was the understanding that the key to success in the United States was for those who aspired to earn more money and possibly write the next success story, was to acquire a needed skill or trade or perhaps attend a university and receive an advanced education.

Creating jobs from scratch generally requires that a business secure money and use that money to construct a facility that will ultimately employ workers.  This takes both time and money.  Meanwhile there are unknown millions of illegal alien workers who are employed across our country right now.  If the federal government simply enforced the immigration laws in a meaningful and balanced manner, fining and, where appropriate, prosecuting employers who intentionally employ illegal aliens and simultaneously arresting illegal aliens found in the workplace, millions of jobs could be liberated without a single facility needing to be built!  The same day that illegal aliens could be removed from a factory, office or other such workplace, American workers of every race, religion and ethnicity could replace that illegal workforce.

We are often told about thousands of new jobs being created yet there is never any mention about how immigration law enforcement could, virtually overnight, liberate millions of jobs for unemployed Americans and simultaneously discourage more illegal aliens from running our nation’s porous borders.

A final thought- as might be expected, foreign workers come to the United States to earn money that they can send to their families back home.  Every year tens of billions of dollars are wired or otherwise sent from the United States to the home countries of millions of foreign workers.  This is money that is not only unearned by beleaguered  American workers but is money that is ultimately not spent or invested in America either.

There is a credit card company that has a slogan that says, “Membership has its rewards.”  The time has long since come for the United States to adopt a similar slogan, “Citizenship has its rewards!”
